Reimagining Futures: From Research into Action – Inquiry, Technology and Human Potential
How can doctoral research help us understand, challenge and shape the future of organisations, industries and society?
01 December 2026 | ATU Letterkenny Campus
Closing date for registration is 20th November

Reimagining Futures: From Research into Action brings together doctoral candidates, supervisors, and academic staff to explore how research can move beyond knowledge generation to inform innovation, transformation and meaningful impact.
Drawing on the “Research into Action” ethos of DICE Labs, the symposium will consider how doctoral and practice-based research can help us understand and respond to complex organisational and societal challenges, question established ways of thinking and working, and open up new possibilities for the future.
A particular focus will be the relationship between human inquiry, technology and transformation. What does it mean to inquire with and through others? How are technologies such as artificial intelligence changing the way we think, work and organise? And how can researchers ensure that knowledge generated through doctoral inquiry translates into meaningful action and sustainable impact?
The symposium will bring together different perspectives on these questions. Professor Joe McDonagh will explore the relational nature of professional doctoral inquiry and the importance of inquiring with and through others. Professor Peter Kawalek will challenge us to consider how technology and AI are reshaping human thinking, attention and the future of organisations and society. Dr Meadbh Ruane will explore how learning sets can support doctoral students in learning with and through others while interrogating their own assumptions, decisions, and impact.
A central feature of the symposium will be the work of the School of Management’s Doctoral candidates. DBA and PhD candidates will share how their doctoral research is developing, highlighting its potential contribution to knowledge, professional practice and organisational or societal impact, while First-year DBA candidates will introduce their emerging research ideas, providing an opportunity to receive feedback and engage with the wider doctoral community.
The symposium will provide an opportunity to exchange ideas, learn from different research perspectives and explore how doctoral inquiry can help shape future practice.
